3 Things NOT To say to someone going through a tough time

When someone is going through a tough time it's hard to know the right thing to say. The "fixer" in us wants to solve all their problems, to promise them it will all be ok.

But WHATEVER we do, we should NEVER say these three things...

1. At least.  If someone has just experienced loss or is dealing with a tragedy, the last thing you want to say to them is "at least you still have..." It's important that we never minimize anyones problems.

2. Why did you? Never blame or judge anyone for their actions.

3. Dont cry. We need to let other express their emotions and deal with grief. Trying to control someones grieving process will never be effective.

By saying these three things we can actually end up hurting the person more and making the situation worse.

The very best thing we can do for someone is to be there for them. Not try to fix them. Listen. Be a friend. And most importantly, let them know we're not going anywhere.
