THE MOST HATED MAN IN AMERICA
This year I've heard a phrase thrown about in conversations and in the media:
"The Most Hated Man In America."
First they said it about con artist Bernie Madoff. Then we used it for disgraced politician John Edwards. And now apparently we "hate" Jesse James for screwing over America's sweetheart, Sandra Bullock.
Enemies are a big part of our life and culture. Apparently we need them to sustain a lot of different things. Effective fundraising. Winning elections and wars. News ratings. And I think in some strange way enemies just make us all feel better about ourselves.
Call me naive and a hopeless dreamer, but I hope some day we won't need a "most hated man in America."
